Architecture de couverture / ADU Moongate
Description textuelle fournie par les architectes. Une ADU donnant sur la rue présente une façade sculpturale, apportant de l’intrigue à un quartier calme d’Altadena. Son mur de séparation en pente expressif avec une grande ouverture circulaire, à la fois, cache et révèle ce qui se trouve au-delà du parapet. Conçu par l’architecte principal Mike Wang de Cover Architecture, le logement de 620 pieds carrés est un endroit où sa mère, Pei et son partenaire, Dan, tous deux anciens professeurs, peuvent profiter de leur retraite tout en vivant à proximité de Mike et de sa jeune famille qui résident dans la maison principale du site.
Contrairement au lot résidentiel typique, l’ADU est situé à l’avant, étant donné que la maison de plain-pied de style ranch de banlieue de 1961 est poussée jusqu’au bord d’un ravin, surplombant le parc du bassin hydrographique de Hahamongna. L’introduction de deux nouvelles formes structurelles – l’ADU et l’entrepôt – est conçue pour défier intentionnellement la maison prosaïque à poteaux et poutres à l’arrière du lot. Ce contraste délibéré dans les styles de construction et les époques est une interaction entre l’ordinaire et l’extraordinaire.
Les formes géométriques, les vides et les ouvertures de la façade avant sont principalement dictés par des exigences programmatiques. Construit sur une fondation surélevée, la nécessité d’escaliers et d’une terrasse pour accéder à l’ADU permet d’intégrer un coin salon extérieur pour prendre un café ou lire un livre derrière la cloison, qui agit également comme une barrière protectrice pour l’intimité.
La courbure de l’avant-toit répond non seulement à la courbure du mur, mais est également configurée pour inviter la lumière naturelle dans l’habitation. La façade qui en résulte évolue vers une composition convaincante où l’entrée voûtée du stockage imite les formes curvilignes de l’ADU, permettant aux deux volumes de se lire comme une entité singulière. Un chemin entre l’ADU et le stockage mène à un espace de cour centralisé et à la maison principale, reliant les habitations à l’extérieur comme un mode de vie partagé et intergénérationnel.
Des géométries gaies s’étendent de l’extérieur à l’intérieur de l’ADU, aux côtés d’une palette de matériaux clairs et naturels. Des détails ludiques tels que les boutons ronds sur les boiseries en contreplaqué de bouleau baltique dans toutes les pièces confèrent une sensation de douceur à l’expérience tactile, tandis que le marbre Pietra Artica de couleur gris clair sur le comptoir de la cuisine et le marbre onyx sur les surfaces de la vanité de la salle de bain confèrent une touche de sophistication. Étant donné l’agencement assez standard d’une ADU, les éléments essentiels tels qu’un espace de couchage, une salle de bain, une cuisine et un espace de vie sont généreusement alloués au confort avec l’ajout d’un petit espace de bureau niché dans un coin de la chambre afin que les utilisateurs puissent poursuivre leurs activités académiques.
