The Arizona State football team’s storybook season didn’t have a storybook ending.
ASU football rallied from a 24-8 deficit in the fourth quarter against the Texas Longhorns to force overtime at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, but lost to Texas in the second overtime, 39-31.
Texas advances to face the winner of the Ohio State vs Oregon game in the College Football Playoff semifinals next week.
ASU’s season ends with an 11-3 record and a Big 12 Conference championship, as well as a College Football Playoff quarterfinals appearance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The Sun Devils were predicted to finish last in the Big 12 this season. They went 3-9 in each of the previous two seasons.
After Texas had taken a 24-8 lead with 10:17 left in the fourth quarter, ASU rallied to tie the game with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Cam Skattebo to Malik McClain and a 2-yard run from Skattebo. The Sun Devils converted both 2-point conversions after the touchdowns to even the score at 24-24.
ASU took a 31-24 lead in the first overtime on a 3-yard Cam Skattebo run, but Texas evented the score with a 28-yard pass from Quinn Ewers to Matthew Golden.
The Longhorns took the lead in the second overtime with a 25-yard pass from Ewers to Gunnar Helm, with Matthew Golden catches the 2-point conversion.
ASU’s Sam Leavitt was intercepted in the second overtime to give Texas the victory.
Leavitt went 24-for-46 for 222 yards for ASU. Skattebo had 30 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing the touchdown pass. He also had eight catches for 99 yards.
Ewers went 20-for-30 for 322 yards and three touchdowns. Golden had seven catches for 149 yards.

Texas just intercepted Sam Leavitt in the second overtime to end the Peach Bowl with a 39-31 win over Arizona State and advance to the College Football semifinals.

Texas scored a touchdown on a 25-yard pass from Quinn Ewers to Gunner Helm on the first play of overtime, and then converted the 2-point conversion to take a 39-31 lead at the Peach Bowl.

Texas ties game vs Arizona State on fourth down in overtime
Texas was down to a 4th & 13 at the ASU 28 and tied the game with a 28-yard pass from Quinn Ewers to an open Matthew Golden in the end zone to force a second overtime at the Peach Bowl.
The Longhorns will get the ball first in the second overtime, with the Sun Devils then given the opportunity to match or tie them.
Teams must go for two after touchdowns starting in this overtime.

The Sun Devils have their first lead in the Peach Bowl.
Cam Skattebo just ran for a 3-yard touchdown in the first overtime to give ASU a 31-24 lead.
Sam Leavitt set up the score by running for 16 yards on a 3rd & 14 at the Texas 19.
Texas will now have a chance. The Longhorns have to score a touchdown and hit the extra point to extend the game.

Texas misses field goal at end of regulation vs Arizona State
We are going to overtime in Atlanta. Bert Auburn just missed a 38-yard field goal as time expired, with the ball hitting the post, sending us to overtime at the Peach Bowl.
Texas drove to ASU 19 on the drive, but came up short again on the missed field goal. The Longhorns’ drive went eight plays for 61 yards.

ASU’s Melquan Stovall hurt on hit vs Texas
ASU’s Melquan Stovall caught a 10-yard pass from Sam Leavitt on 3rd & 15 at the ASU 38, but was hurt after being hit in the helmet by a Texas defender.
The officials reviewed the play and did not call targeting on the play, much to the ire of Kenny Dillingham, ASU fans and college football fans.
ASU punted the ball back to Texas with less than a minute left.
Texas misses field goal vs Arizona State
It was the Longhorns that failed to score in their opponent’s territory this time.
Texas missed a 48-yard field goal by Bert Auburn to end a 9-play, 35-yard drive and keep the score tied at 24.
After a false start penalty, Texas interestingly chose to pass it on 1st & 10 and 2nd & 10, with Quinn Ewers’ incomplete passes not taking much time off the clock. Ewers ran for five yards to set up the field goal attempt.
There is 1:19 left in the fourth quarter.

We have a tie ballgame in Texas.
Arizona State just scored on a 3-play, 79-yard drive, with Cam Skattebo running in for a 2-yard TD to pull ASU within 24-22 and then running it in for the 2-point conversion to tie the game, 24-24.
ASU won down with 10:17 left in the fourth quarter, 24-8. There is 5 minutes left in Atlanta.
Sam Leavitt connected on a 62-yard pass to Skattebo to help set up the score for ASU, with a facemask penalty also helping ASU on the play.

ASU has found the end zone for the first time in this game, and it came on a trick play.
Cam Skattebo came back in the game and threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Malik McClain and the Sun Devils then converted the two-point conversion on a Sam Leavitt pass to Xavier Guillory to pull Arizona State within one score tat the Peach Bowl.
There is 6:31 left.
ASU’s drive went for 10 plays and 75 yards and took 3:45 off the clock.

Sam Leavitt’s right ankle heavily taped vs Texas in Peach Bowl
The Peach Bowl is taking a toll on the Sun Devils. In addition to Cam Skattebo « vomiting profusely » per an ESPN report, QB Sam Leavitt’s right ankle is heavily taped and he is limping around on the field.
The physicality of the Longhorns is wearing down some of the Sun Devils. Skattebo has been playing sparingly on ASU’s most recent drive, with Kyson Brown getting more run for Arizona State.
Quinn Ewers extends Texas’ lead with rushing touchdown vs Arizona State
Texas is firmly in control of the Peach Bowl after Quinn Ewers rushed for a 5-yard touchdown to give the Longhorns a 24-8 lead with 10:17 left in the fourth quarter.
The play ended a 13-play, 76 yard drive that took 5:24.
The Longhorns got a key 29-yard pass from Ewers to Matthew Golden on 3rd & 10 at the ASU 38 to extend the possession.
A 16-point deficit is going to be very hard for ASU to overcome in 10:17, especially when it hasn’t found the end zone all game.

Cam Skattebo ‘vomiting profusely’ on sideline during game
ESPN reported during a break in action that ASU’s Cam Skattebo was « vomiting profusely » on the sideline at the Peach Bowl.
This is something to monitor as he is obviously vital to the Sun Devils’ hopes of trying to get back in this game.
Arizona State gets closer with field goal vs Texas
The Sun Devils just can’t get into the end zone against the Longhorns.
They have pulled within 17-8 on a 36-yard field goal by Karston Kieffer, but it feels like they should have had more.
Red zone issues have plagued Arizona State all game and the team only scored three points after having a 1st & 10 at the Texas 12. But at least it was three points this time, instead of coming up empty.
Cam Skattebo is starting to make his presence felt. He’s up to 110 yards on 23 carries including a 33-yard run on ASU’s most recent drive.

Arizona State defense gets safety vs Texas in Peach Bowl
Shamari Simmons had to sit out the first half of the Peach Bowl because of a targeting call in Arizona State’s win over Iowa State in the Big 12 championship game.
He just made his presence felt early in the second half.
Simmons forced a fumble by Quintrevion Wisner that Quinn Ewers recovered, only to have ASU tackle Ewers in the end zone for a safety and the two points.
ASU’s defense has come to play in the second half. Can its offense help it out?

Arizona State fans continue to support team in Peach Bowl
At the University Sports Grill in Tempe, the energy was sky high by halftime. Despite Texas’ lead, Sun Devils fans filled the crowded bar with cheers with cheers every few minutes. Harrison Meyers and Dan Allison are seniors at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Both are majoring in sports journalism.Meyers, who is from California, and Allison, who is from Massachusetts, haven’t always been Sun Devils fans. But they’ll be lifelong fans after attending the school, they said. While the Sun Devils haven’t performed as well during the majority of Meyers and Allison’s time at Arizona State University, they have excitedly watched this season as football coach Kenny Dillingham led the team to the Peach Bowl. « This is the first time they’ve made the college football playoffs since it became a thing. And it’s just huge, » Meyers said.
Christine Carver-Cavecche traveled from her home in Southern California with her daughter to watch the game in Tempe among other Sun Devils Fans. Carver-Cavecche is a longtime Sun Devils fan, having graduated from Arizona State University in 1992. It was there that she met her now-husband.The couple have raised their daughters, who didn’t attend Arizona State University, as lifelong Sun Devils fans. Carver-Cavecche’s husband even took their daughter, Brooke Cavecche, to see football games all around the country. Despite living in California, the family frequently returns to the Valley for Sun Devils games, sometimes holding season tickets. Carver-Cavecche’s husband even went to Atlanta to watch the Peach Bowl.Despite Texas’s lead over Arizona, Carver-Cavecche is remaining optimistic. She even has tickets lined up to attend the Cotton Bowl in Texas if the Sun Devils win the Peach Bowl. « It’s pretty exciting that we can get this far, » Carver-Cavecche said.

Arizona State comes up short again vs Texas with Longhorns’ goal-line stand
The Sun Devils have turned the ball over on down again against Texas, with the Longhorns’ defense coming up huge deep in their own territory, stuffing Sam Leavitt and Cam Skattebo on 3rd & goal and 4th & goal runs at the Texas 2-yard line.
That hurts.
ASU’s drive went 11 plays for 60 yards and took 5:41 off the clock. The Sun Devils had a 1st & goal at the six and couldn’t get in the end zone.
ASU is now 1-for-4 on fourth down in this game.
ASU gets to Quinn Ewers on first possession of the second half
The Sun Devil defense sacked Quinn Ewers twice on the first possession of the second half for Texas, holding the Longhorns to a 3-and-out.
Texas takes 17-3 lead into half of Peach Bowl vs Arizona State
It’s been a half of missed opportunities for the Sun Devils. The latest? A 36-yard field goal attempt by Carston Kieffer was blocked near the end of the first half, preserving a 17-3 halftime lead for Texas over Arizona State.
The Longhorns get the ball to start the second half against the Sun Devils.
Some explosive plays were the story of the first 30 minutes for Texas, as the Longhorns scored on a 2-play drive on their first possession and a 75-yard punt return touchdown the second time they got the ball.
ASU turned the ball over a couple times on downs in Texas territory and missed the field goal before the half.
The Sun Devils outgained Texas 178-133 in the first half and hold a 20:11 to 9:49 advantage in time of possession.
ASU has held Texas to 19 rushing yards on 11 carries, but Texas has held ASU to 47 yards on 20 carries.

ASU football converts fake punt vs Texas
ASU appeared to go 3-and-out on a pivotal drive against Texas, but extended the drive with a fake punt as punter Kanyon Floyd connected on a 32-yard pass to Blazen Lono-Wong for 32 yards to the Texas 47 for a first down on ASU’s 4th & 9 play.
Can the Sun Devils now capitalize before the half?
Arizona State gets big stop vs Texas
The Sun Devils’ defense came through, holding Texas to a 3-and-out after the Longhorns only gained five yards on the possession. ASU’s Keyshaun Elliott made a big shoestring tackle of Quinn Ewers on a 3rd down run to force the punt.
Ewers is now 6-for-10 for 114 yards and a touchdown pass for Texas. The Longhorns have only rushed for 18 yards on 10 carries.
Can Arizona State get something going on offense and get closer to Texas in the Peach Bowl before the half?

Texas Longhorns force another Arizona State turnover on downs
ASU elected to go for it on 4th & 10 at the Texas 34, but Sam Leavitt was sacked by Trey Moore for a loss of four yards.
The Arizona State QB just doesn’t have time in the pocket as Texas’ speed on defense is making a huge difference in this game.
ASU’s latest drive was for nine plays and 37 yards, but the Sun Devils came up empty again.
A dropped catch from Chamon Metayer on the drive didn’t help Arizona State’s cause.
There is 5:09 left in the first half and it’s imperative that Arizona State’s defense gets a stop on Texas if it wants to stay in this game.
Arizona State holds Texas to field goal as Longhorns add to lead
The Longhorns are now ahead by two touchdowns in the Peach Bowl.
Bert Auburn made a 22-yard field goal to make it 17-3 in Atlanta, capping off a 13-play, 72-yard drive for Texas.
Texas elected to attempt a field goal on a 4th & 7 play on the drive, but elected to go for it after a defensive offsides penalty on the Sun Devils made it 4th & 2.
They extended the drive with a 5-yard pass from Quinn Ewers to Matthew Golden, but ASU’s defense then buckled down to force the field goal.
A defensive pass interference call on Myles Rowser also hurt ASU on the possession.

Cam Skattebo rushed for one yard on that 4th & 2 play, with the Sun Devils turning the ball over on downs and coming up empty on their drive.
Big play set to start second quarter of Peach Bowl for Arizona State
The Sun Devils face a 4th & 2 at the Texas 25 to start the second quarter at the Peach Bowl.
What will they do?
ASU is in the midst of a 10-play, 44-yard drive that has taken 4:47 off the clock.
Some key first quarter stats: Sam Leavitt is 9-for-16 for 49 yards for ASU. Cam Skattebo has 25 yards on eight carries.
Quinn Ewers is 2-for-3 for 77 yards and a touchdown pass. Texas has rushed for -2 yards on two carries.
ASU holds a 79-75 advantage in total yards and a 12:55 to 2:05 advantage in time of possession, but the explosive plays for the Longhorns give them a 14-3 advantage on the scoreboard.
ASU football defense gets big stop vs Texas
The ASU defense got a big stop against Texas, its first stop of the game.
The Longhorns went 3-and-out on a drive that began with a Prince Dorbah sack of Quinn Ewers. Dorbah interestingly played for Texas before transferring to ASU.
It’s a start for a defense that has struggled early in this game.
Arizona State goes 3-and-out again vs Texas
Sam Leavitt and ASU can’t get anything going offensively in this game, with the Longhorns applying a lot of pressure on the Sun Devils’ QB.
Cam Skattebo rushed for no yards on a run and then Leavitt threw two incomplete passes on the possession.
Leavitt is just 4-for-9 for 15 yards in this game.
Skattebo has five carries for 15 yards.
Texas extends lead vs Arizona State with 75-yard punt return touchdown
Texas has run two offensive plays. The Longhorns have 14 points.
After scoring on a 2-play drive, Texas just extended their lead with a 75-yard punt return touchdown by Silas Bolden to make the score 14-3.
This is obviously not the start that ASU, nor its fans envisioned in the Peach Bowl, making this next possession huge for the Sun Devils.

ASU fans keeping faith at viewing of Peach Bowl in Tempe
At around the 11 a.m. kickoff, ASU fans were lining up at the Harkins Theatre at Tempe Marketplace for the Peach Bowl watch party. Sun Devils fans paid $22 for their ticket, which also came with a small popcorn. Harkins is using two theaters for the game. Each auditorium had roughly 50 to 60 people when the game began, with cheers and shouts coming from each one. Fred Barrigas and Aurelia Sanchez were at Harkins ahead of the kickoff. Sanchez, who is an ASU alum, said she wasn’t much of a football fan. Until she met Barrigas. « When I went to college, I never went to any games. And when I met him, then I started, » Sanchez said.The couple are longtime Sun Devils fans and have been season ticket holders since the first Rose Bowl in 1987. The couple are hoping for a Sun Devils win that will take them to the Cotton Bowl and then to the championship game.

The Sun Devils just went 3-and-out on their second possession of the game, with Sam Leavitt throwing incomplete passes around a 2-yard pass to Melquan Stovall.
Texas responds with quick strike vs Arizona State
Well, that was quick.
Texas has taken a 7-3 lead on Arizona State with a 2-play, 77-yard drive on Arizona State.
The plays? Quinn Ewers completed a 54-yard pass to Matthew Golden and then a 23-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore.
That was just too easy for Texas.

Arizona State gets on board first in Peach Bowl vs Texas
The Sun Devils have scored first in the Peach Bowl.
Arizona State took a 3-0 lead on a 39-yard field goal from Carston Kieffer, which capped off a 12-play, 63-yard drive.
The made field goal is a good sign for the Sun Devils, who have struggled in the kicking game this season.
The Longhorns’ Anthony Hill was called for a facemask penalty to help ASU on the drive.

Arizona State gets early help from Texas with penalty
The Sun Devils opened the game with a 10-yard rush from Cam Skattebo, but then chose to throw it three straight times and had to punt on a 4th & 4 at the ASU 41.
But Texas’ Morice Blackwell Jr. ran into punter Kanyon Flood on ASU’s punt attempt, giving the Sun Devils new life on the possession.
Texas wins coin toss vs Arizona State
The Longhorns won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, meaning they will kick off to Arizona State to begin the Peach Bowl College Football Playoff game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
