Les Yankees ont encore besoin de six victoires supplémentaires pour décrocher leur premier titre des World Series depuis 2009 (et le 28e de l’histoire de la franchise). Mais selon Jazz Chisholm Jr., les Bombers du Bronx l’ont déjà dans le sac.
« Nous sommes champions des World Series. Aucun autre doute dans mon esprit. Chisholm a déclaré à Jeff Passan d’ESPN avant le troisième match de la série de championnats de la Ligue américaine à Cleveland jeudi.
Ce n’est pas la première fois que le joueur de troisième but exprime sa confiance dans les chances de New York en octobre. Après que l’équipe ait perdu le deuxième match de la série AL Division contre les Royals au Yankee Stadium, Chisholm a fait remarquer que Kansas City « a juste eu de la chance ». Il a réitéré cette position sur les réseaux sociaux.
Chisholm a été accueilli par des huées constantes de la part des fidèles des Royals après le déplacement de la série à Kansas City, une réponse que le joueur de 26 ans a adoptée de tout cœur. Sa confiance a été récompensée lorsque les Yankees ont remporté la série en 4 matchs.
Chisholm, qui a réalisé 3 en 23 (.130) avec un circuit et un double lors de ses premières séries éliminatoires avec les Yankees après avoir été acquis des Marlins à la date limite des échanges, pourrait faire face à une réaction similaire de la part des fans des Guardians à Progressive Field après sa dernière proclamation.
Le temps nous dira si Chisholm entrera dans les annales de l’histoire du sport new-yorkais avec d’autres athlètes dont les garanties de championnat ont porté leurs fruits – aux côtés de Joe Namath, Mark Messier et Plaxico Burress – ou s’il suivra le chemin de , dire, Patrick Ewing.
