The Covelli Center is sold out for Senior Night, so expect a raucous crowd once we get rolling.

Excellent crowd confirmed:

1st period: We get our first flurry of the evening just before the one minute mark. Lightening Luke shoots in and finishes quickly for three points. True freshman Lilledahl rides redshirt sophomore and 2024 qualifier McCrone for about a minute. Lilledahl goes right back in for an ankle pick and Lilledahl trips and finishes for a 6-1 lead. Make that 6-2 as McCrone escapes. Lilledahl back in on McCrone’s legs, attempting to snag another TD before the period ends. McCrone dives over top and has Lilledhal’s ankles and he keeps them in a scramble for the rest of the period. 6-2 for Luke at the break.

2nd period: Lilledahl chooses to take a turn underneath to start the second period. McCrone slips in a boot on the left side and he starts working for a cradle. He’s got it locked and rocks Lilledahl to his back. Lilledahl kicking but McCrone tightens up. There’s the fall! Down 6-2 and Brendan McCrone shows why he just may be the most dangerous 125-pounder in the country!

125 final: McCrone over Lilledahll by fall, 3:58

Ohio State 6, Penn State 0

1st period: And Davis will take the mat, so we’ll get a ranked matchup at 133 as the Buckeyes send out their redshirt sophomore Bouzakis. Two national qualifiers on the mat as well. Lots of upper body action early. Good hand fighting in the first minute. Both attempt a whip over, Bouzakis sends Davis to his butt but Davis rolls through and his back to his neutral. Bouzakis has Davis in trouble on the mat, neutral danger is countered, great defense from Davis though getting big and avoiding the takedown. The period ends 0-0.

2nd period: Bouzaki starts the second underneath. Bouzakis’ first couple of attempts are thwarted but he stands and is out after the seconds, still 0-0. Davis in on a single leg, Bouzakis with a couple of strong defensive moves but Davis powers through for the takedown and the 3-0 lead. Bouzakis trying to hip over, now he’s got a cradle! He gets the reversal and some nearfall. Davis fighting the whole way through. And in fact no nearfall were awarded. So it’s 3-3 as the period ends with both wrestlers still scrambling on the mat. Penn State throws a challenge brick, perhaps saying there was never control on the reversal. Davis has over a minute of riding time. On the replay it looks like two nearfall  swipes were counted but maybe not. Needless to say this decision could be difference in this bout. Additionally, if PSU loses they will be done with challenges for the day. Davis and Bouzakis both getting a chance to catch their breath as this challenge stretches on.

On the review it’s ruled a reversal but no nearfall. Not sure if PSU loses that challenge. Neither do the PSU coaches as Cody Sanderson can be seen asking the referee if they get the brick back. And Cody takes the brick back so I guess the PSU challenge turned into a referee’s review? Tough to know from watching the BTN broadcast. Okay tso 3-3, riding time was down to about 50 seconds for Davis and the period finally ends.

3rd period. Davis goes underneath. He’s out almost immediately to make it 4-3. Davis back in on a leg. Davis runs the pike and it’s 7-3 with the TD. Reversal for Bouzakis on a switch, 7-5. Bouzakis runs the riding time clock down under a minute, then cuts him. Davis is slow to get up and is dinged for stalling. 8-5 Davis still leads but he might be fading. Bouzakis on the attack. He’s stuck in short offense though and Davis is finding the strength to keep Bouzakis from getting a go-behind. Gator roll for Bouzakis but he can’t capitalize. And buzzer sounds, Davis will survive with the decision!

133 final: Davis over Bouzakis by decision, 8-5

Ohio State 6, Penn State 3

1st period: A rematch of the 2024 finals, which Mendez won. Mendez also won at the All-Star Classic last November. Overall these two are 3-1 in their collegiate careers. Mendez fires off the first attack that gets to a leg, but Bartlett whizzers hard and they get back to neutral, no scores after one minute of wrestling. A long period of tactical wrestling before Mendez fires off another shot, Barlett furiously defends, then goes headhunting. Mendez slips out of the headlock but Barlett slips in a merkel and gets the takedown in short time. Rideout makes it 3-0 after the first.

2nd period: Barlett takes down. He’s out fairly quickly to run his lead up to 4-0. Same score after a minute of collar ties. Clock winds down to short time and neither wrestler has level changed. Period ends 4-0.

3rd period: Mendez elects to go underneath. He escapes quickly to chop the lead back down to 4-1. Mendez might be looking for a late takedown and rideout but Bartlett shoots in to try and change up those plans. Mendez defends and action is stalemated. Under a minute to go, Mendez walks Bartlett out of bounds and he gets hit with stalling. 30 seconds to go. Mendez on the attack, but Bartlett is defending. Bartlett will eat another stall call but that’s no bother. Bartlett takes it 4-2 and adds another chapter to this storied rivalry!

141 final: Bartlett over Mendez by decision, 4-2

Ohio State 6, Penn State 6

149: Shayne Van Ness, Penn State vs Dylan D’Emilio, Ohio State

1st period: Lots of handfighting in the first between two All-Americans. D’Emilio gets in on a leg but Van Ness defends. Then Van Ness gets in on a leg but D’Emilio defends. Another shot by Van Ness but D’Emilio is saved by the out of bounds. Solid action but no scores or stall calls as it’s bagels on the board after 3 minutes.

2nd period: D’Emilio on bottom, he stands and is out quickly to draw first blood, 1-0. D’Emilio in on a couple of shots, the second one has him in deep. Dylan picks Van Ness up in the air, takes a few steps and slams Van Ness down to the mat, legally, but it’s not controlled and Van Ness chest wraps and rolls out of danger. Great defense from Shayne. More handfighting but no more scores, 1-0 after two periods.

3rd period: Van Ness gets a turn on bottom, and he’s out in a hurry to knot up the score, riding time not a factor. 1-1 Van Ness shoots D’Emilio out of bounds, no stall call but Coach Casey Cunningham definitely wanted one. Great defense by D’Emilio. Another deep shot by Van Ness, more great defense by D’Emilio, until Van Ness finishes with 5 seconds left in regulation. Van Ness guts out the win 4-1!

149 final: Van Ness over D’Emilio by decision, 4-1

Penn State 9, Ohio State 6

157: Joe Sealey, Penn State vs Brandon Cannon, Ohio State

1st period: Two backups at 157. This will be the first match of any kind for the true freshman Joe Sealey, a blue-chip recruit from Wyoming Seminary prep school by way of North Carolina. Cannon on the attack, and he’ll score the first takedown of the dual for the Buckeyes with a gritty go-behind. Quick escape for Sealey makes it 3-1. Lots of handfighting but no more scores for the period, 3-1.

2nd period: Sealey takes down. Cannon stops his initial escape attempts, but can’t get much going. And a long ride for Cannon. Sealey is down flat but Cannon is parallel and we get a stalemate, though the crowd wanted a stall. Cannon breaks Sealey down on the restart and Sealey gets hit for stalling now. Period ends still 4-1 but Cannon will have riding time locked up shortly.

3rd period: Cannon gets a turn on bottom. He’s out quickly to make it 4-1. Snap down go behind and the redshirt freshman is starting to put it on Sealey. Takedown makes it 7-1. Stall call makes it 8-1. Another stall and it’s 9-1, The Crowd is on their feet. Tack on the riding time point and Brandon Cannon will get a major decision for the Buckeyes with a 9-1 victory!

157 final: Cannon over Sealey by major decision, 10-1

Ohio State 10, Penn State 9

165: Mitchell Mesenbrink, Penn State vs Brock Herman, Ohio State

1st period: We return from the break with the heavily favored NCAA runner-up from Penn State taking on a redshirt freshman 157-pounder from Ohio State. Quick snap down go behind for Mesenbrink makes it 3-0 very early. Mesenbrink throwing cross faces but Herman not turning, though now his nose starts bleeding. Optional start once the nose is plugged. Herman shoots in but Mesenbrink violently sprawls and gets another go-behind to make it 6-1. Herman gets hit for stalling as they go out of bounds, no change in position. Optional start and it’s 6-2, shot by Herman quick takedown by Mesenbrink to make it 9-2. Repeat to make it 12-3. One more time before the period ends and it’s 15-4.

2nd period: The only question is can Mitchell get a pin or will he get his 14th tech-fall? Mesenbrink on bottom, reversal for Mesenbrink and it’s 17-4. Stall call on Herman and it’s 18-4. One more point will do it. But first the Buckeye trainer must attend to Herman’s bleeding. back to action, Herman still on bottom. Stalemate is called. Now a stall warning and that point make its official, 19-4 tech-fall for Mitchell Mesenbrink. Penn State back in the lead, my guess is for good.

165 final: Mesenbrink over Herman by tech-fall, 19-4 4:39

Penn State 14, Ohio State 10

1st period: PSU NCAA champ vs Ohio State’s All-American. Kharchla darts in on a high crotch, he’s in deep, but Haines is very difficult to score on. Long scramble, but Kharchla corrals him for three and the early lead. Quick escape makes it 3-1. Another single leg for Kharchla, sprawl from Haines. Kharchla tries to slide under for a better position but this time Haines defends and it’s a stalemate. Ankle pick from Haines from Kharchla chucks him to the side. Still 3-1 for Kharchla at the break.

2nd period: Haines on bottom. He stands and is up quickly, riding time under 30 seconds for Carson. 3-2, Haines now stepping his attacks. Under a minute to go. Haines shoots, Kharchal defends and has a leg again. Haines wrestles to a stalemate. Short time, still 3-2 lead for Kharchla. Good handfighting but no more scores.

3rd period: Kharchla chooses down. Haines can get the rideout to force overtime. Khrachla sits on the whistle, he’s stopped, then stands and is out to make it 4-2. Shot by Kharchla but Haines goes berserk on the counter. Nice defense at first but Levi would not be denied and gets the takedown and the 5-4 lead. Haines turks the leg and has Kharcla fighting to avoid the turn. Kharchla down flat. Time ticking away. And Gaines completes the comeback win and adds a riding time point as well!

174 final: Haines over Kharchla by decision, 6-4

Penn State 17, Ohio State 10

1st period: Starocci is on his quest for a fifth NCAA title. True sophomore Rogotzke looking to get back to the NCAAs and earn his first AA. Starocci in on a leg about 30 seconds into the first, he comes out the backdoor and looks to swim behind for the takedown but their legs get tangled and potentially dangerous is called. Another attack from Starocci and this double leg would not be denied. Starocci rides for a bit then cuts Rogotzke to make it 3-1. Starocci right back in on a single and he muscles his way through Ryder’s defenses to make it 6-1. Starocci content to ride out the period but Rogotzke had other plans and he escapes with about 5 seconds left on the clock, 6-2 lead for Carter.

2nd period: Rogotzke on bottom, optional start for Starocci. Quick escape, then a takedown for Starocci to make it 9-2. Escape for Rogotzke but Starocci starting to pour it on, 12-4 after the next takedown. Optional start after a stalemate, snap down go-behind to make it 15-5. Starocci wants one more before the period ends. He won’t get it, though he does lead 15-6 at the break.

3rd period: Looks like Starocci chooses neutral. Takedown and release to make it 18-7. One minute deep, Starocci is going to have to push for the tech-fall. First stall warning on Rogotzke. Short time, riding time locked up. Single leg for Starocci, and he’ll convert with just a few seconds left to reach the tech-fall.

184 final: Starocci over Rogotzke by tech-fall, 22-7 7:00

Penn State 22, Ohio State 10

1st period: Redshirt freshman Barr vs redshirt sophomore and first time starter Shumate. One minute, good handfighting but no scores. Barr maybe gaining the upper hand with his snap downs, though no scores after two minutes. Barr drives Shumate to the boundary but Shumate circles back in and it’s Barr who’s heels go out of bounds before the restart. Donuts on the scoreboard after 3 minutes, no stall calls.

2nd period: Barr takes bottom. He’s out quickly and goes on the attack. Ankle picks from Barr. Shumate able to defend for a bit but right around the minute mark see Barr power through for the takedown and the 4-0 lead. Barr gets the rideout to take his 4-0 lead to the third.

3rd period: Shumate takes bottom, Barr rides for just over a minute before he cuts him. Barr going crazy mode in the third. Takedown, cut, takedown, cut, takedown and it’s 13-4 (I think, tough to keep up). 16-5 in short time now, and the final takedown plus the riding time point makes it a 20-5 tech-fall just before regulation ends. Back-to-back seven minute techs!

197 final: Barr over Shumate by tech-fall, 20-5 7:00

Penn State 27, Ohio State 10

285: Cole Mirasola, Penn State vs Nick Feldman, Ohio State

1st period: True freshman from Wisconsin Cole Mirasola, who’s twin brother Connor is on the team ay 197, taking on the All-American Nick Feldman. Early shot from Feldman and he finishes cleanly for a quick 3. Make it a 3-1 lead after the quick escape from Mirasola. The subsequent scramble is stalemated. One minute left in the period. The period ends still 3-1, though Mirasola was in the midst of a nice ankle pick when the buzzer sounded.

2nd period: Fledman underneath. He’s up and out quickly to extend his lead by a point, it’s 4-1. Ankle pick attempt by Mirasola but Feldman showing off why he was the top recruit a couple of years ago. Lightening quick reattack and ferocious finish to make it 7-1, now 7-2 after another escape. Lots of handfighting but no more scores, still 7-2.

3rd period: Feldman rights for a bit before Mirasola escapes to make it 7-3. Feldman high crotch attack, good defense from Mirasola though and we get a stalemate. Final minute of regulation in this dual. Mirasola now in on a shot with 30 seconds to go. And just when it looked like we may get a stalemate Feldman gets a go behind to make it 10-3. A riding time point will make it a major but there’s not enough time. Feldman still gets the rideout and you can put it in the books. A win for the Buckeyes to close out the dual.

285 final: Feldman over Mirasola by decision, 10-3.

Penn State 27, Ohio State 13

That’s all from the Covelli Center and that’s the last competition of the regular season for the Buckeyes. Penn State has another dual on Sunday against Illinois (that I’ll also live blog!) and then a final dual next week against American. Sorry for the typos, see you Sunday!
