The year’s top filmmakers are being toasted at the DGA Awards on Saturday night.
At the ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton and once again hosted by Judd Apatow, the Directors Guild of America will recognize the best across TV and film. Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown) are up for the night’s big prize in theatrical feature film, and Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light), Megan Park (My Old Ass), RaMell Ross (Nickel Boys), Halfdan Ullmann Tondel (Armand) and Sean Wang (Dìdi) are nominated for first-time theatrical feature film.
In the TV categories, Shogun, The Penguin and The Bear lead with three nods each, while other notable nominees included Ripley, Disclaimer, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks and The Diplomat. Ang Lee is also set to receive the lifetime achievement award for his long and impressive career.
This year’s DGA honors are being handed out on a busy awards weekend, following Friday night’s Critics Choice Awards and happening roughly the same time as the PGA Awards, which are taking place across the street.
DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter opened the show with a call for production to return to Los Angeles in the wake of the devastating wildfires, and Apatow — hosting the show for the sixth time — took the stage as he joked, “I’m what Mel Brooks would look like if he took ‘The Substance.’”
He also poked fun at some of this year’s honored films, noting that in the case of Emilia Pérez, “Hollywood hasn’t had a new idea in decades and then suddenly we cram all of them into one fucking movie.” Apatow also teased that it was the “first movie that Trump is trying to deport,” and called Conclave “a prequel to Spotlight.”
Diving into politics, Apatow told the crowd, “there are some of you in those room who voted for Trump — I won’t judge you but God will” and said “I’m getting very depressed, to deal with it I just started microdosing meth. My new pronouns are we’re fucked.” He also mused about he “should start making movies and TV that MAGA people would like, like The Real Housewives of Jan. 6 or Extreme Home Makeover: Gaza edition,” or questioned if Hollywood should go even woker, like “Dune 3 with all gay sandworms” or “The Amazing Spider-Person.’”
A complete list of this year’s DGA Awards nominees follows. Winners will be noted as they’re announced live. Refresh for the latest.
